How to Kick Senioritis

Graduating is such an exciting time because you finally get to see the outcome of all the hard work you put in to get to this point. College is not necessarily easy but it is also one of the best times of life because you get to meet new people, try new things, and focus on preparing yourself for the future. Moving on from college and going into another chapter of life can be very exciting as well, but in order to get to that next chapter you have to go through the journey of senior year, and it can be tough.

If you are like me then during your senior year you have experienced what is commonly known as senioritis. Senioritis is used to describe a lack of motivation to push through senior year. While finishing my senior year and talking to other seniors, I have realized that senioritis goes so much deeper than not being motivated.

During this time of looking for a job, or a graduate school, everything is up in the air, which can be very nerve wracking considering the fact that we haven’t really gone through this much change since deciding on a college to attend. Hearing from peers that have jobs lined up after graduation can be very discouraging, but through talking to other seniors I’ve realized that most of us actually have no clue what is going on. This doesn’t make not having anything lined up any better, but it does bring me peace to know that I am not alone in this part of life.

What I have been doing to make myself feel better about graduating is making sure that I am preparing to be a good employee or graduate student. This looks like making sure that my resume communicates what it needs to and also continuing to stay focused on school so that I can show myself worthy of being accepted into a graduate program. If you are a senior trying to figure out what is going to happen with your future, my advice would be to not forget how important it is to live in the present and focus on preparing yourself for the future the best way you can.

The Importance of Unplugging

If you are like me, you probably accept the fact that you spend way too much time using technology – especially on social media. As a college student, I know how important it is to manage my time wisely, and scrolling through Instagram can very easily cut into time that should be used to complete homework. The temptation to be glued to social media is strong, but when I think about how many hours a day I spend on my phone I do get a bit concerned. When I was in high school my mom would always tell me not to spend so much time on my phone, but it wasn’t until this summer that I realized how important it is to manage my time with technology. Unplugging is not easy, especially since having a phone and laptop has been a part of my life and so many people’s lives for so long now. However, there are so many benefits to stepping away from technology for a little, and those benefits point back to the importance of unplugging.

Did you know that spending too much time using technology affects mental health? The facts about overly using a device is mind-blowing to me. I honestly don’t want to know how many times a day I check my phone, because I know the numbers will disgust me. Often, I find myself pushing my home screen button for no reason, hoping that I will be greeted by some sort of notification. This behavior is common, according to Psychology Today, which states, “Dopamine causes you to want, desire, seek out, and search.” When we do check our phones and see a notification from someone, this dopamine is being released in our brains, making us desire to check it again and again. The dopamine release shows how difficult it is to unplug, and it makes me happy to know that I’m not the only person who really enjoys the activity that happens on my phone. To keep myself from checking my phone a lot, I try to keep it in a separate room or in my backpack while I’m doing homework so I don’t get tempted to waste time on it.

Whenever I use my phone for an excessive amount of time I can feel myself becoming anxious. While researching for this post, I came across wise words from the Becoming Minimalist blog. The blog says, “In a world where outside noise is coming quicker and louder than ever, the need for solitude becomes more apparent… and easier to overlook. True solitude and meditation will always require the intentional action of shutting off the noise and the screens.” I find solitude by setting moments aside each day to spend time alone and talk to God, and this simple act brings me peace that helps me get through the rest of my day. A great way to practice solitude is to simply take a walk alone to give yourself time to process what is happening around you. Another great practice is to set aside time in your day to pray and read the Bible. This will not only help your spiritual life, but it will also bring you peace and solitude, which is seemingly difficult to come by in our world today.

Another downside of using social media continuously is that it may cause you to struggle with comparison. The United Kingdom’s Royal Society for Public Health surveyed 1,479 people ages 14-24, and one respondent said, “Instagram easily makes girls and women feel as if their bodies aren’t good enough, as people add filters and edit their pictures in order to make them look ‘perfect’.” I know this has personally been a struggle for me in a different way, which is that I see my peers moving into sought-after internships and jobs after college. While stepping away from social media has helped me in this situation, I have also had to come to the understanding that people mostly post the best parts of their lives on social media, so their lives are rarely what they appear to be online. A practice that has helped me is turning to Proverbs 3:5-6 which says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” You may have heard this verse a ton of times like me, but it always helps to be reminded of this truth.

Overall, social media and technology aren’t bad, you just have to know how to manage it properly. It is important to point out the key areas that excessive use of technology could affect in order to effectively make a change. I hope this blog post helps you work towards becoming a healthier and more productive student. Personally, I realize that spending time on technology is not bad, but it can be if it is not done in moderation.

Jumanji & Star Wars Movie Night: Preview

A jock, a nerd, an outcast and a popular girl end up in detention and have an unlikely bonding experience. Does this plot sound familiar to you? Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a hilarious mix of The Breakfast Club and Indiana Jones.

This movie features four teenagers who end up playing a video game and getting stuck inside of it in the bodies of the players they chose. Each player has their own strengths and weaknesses that they have to use to their advantage to win the game. In order to get out of the game they must use each other to complete all of the challenges without losing the three lives that are given to each of them – basically, they must finish what Alan from the previous Jumanji movie started. Through each of these challenges, the players end up growing closer together and realize that the only way they can win the game is if they use each other’s strengths to do so.

What made me really enjoy this movie was how funny it was, yet how inspirational it also comes across.  Its message to live your one life to its fullest and embrace other people’s differences is one that never gets old. Another component of this movie that makes it great is all of the talented actors that it features. The cast includes Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Nick Jonas, and Karen Gillan, as well as a few other lesser known actors that also put on a great performance. It’s no surprise that since the movie was released in December it has achieved extended time in theaters. With such a funny plot and a great cast, it’s almost impossible not to enjoy this remake.

Preview: The Greatest Showman

Since “The Greatest Showman” was released in theaters on December 8th, it has filled news feeds, entertainment blogs and maybe even your friends’ conversations with reviews and opinions. Your friends at Student Activities are here to give you some background on yet another popular musical that will make you say, “I’m glad I purchased a MoviePass so I can watch this movie three more times in theaters!”

“The Greatest Showman” is a musical that follows the life of P.T. Barnum as he works to create what is known as Barnum & Bailey’s circus. The film features original music written by Benji Pasek and Justin Paul, who both wrote for your favorite recent musicals “La La Land” and “Dear Evan Hansen”. There is also a star-studded cast featuring Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Zendaya and many more talented actors/actresses. While the movie is nothing short of a visual masterpiece, its album also does an excellent job of taking listeners through Barnum’s journey of following his dreams with every song.

Speaking of the album, it starts off on a high note with “The Greatest Show”. This song fulfills its purpose of setting the tone for the rest of the movie. The songs “Come Alive” and “The Other Side” also do a great job of capturing the thrill and excitement of the circus life. While these three songs are more upbeat and fast-paced, the rest of the album offers uplifting ballads. When listening to “A Million Dreams”, one can only feel inspired as young Barnum sings “a million dreams are keeping me awake”. “This Is Me” tells the circus’ bearded-lady’s story of self-acceptance in an honest way, with lyrics such as, “When the sharpest words wanna cut me down, I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out, I am brave, I am bruised, I am who I’m meant to be, this is me”.

Overall, “The Greatest Showman” is a well-written body of work that effectively communicates the journey and challenges that P.T. Barnum faces while trying to make his dream come true. Whether listening to the album or watching the movie, you can easily follow along with the musical’s uplifting message.
